The holiday season is a wonderful time to show appreciation for your loved ones with gifts from the heart. It is also typically the time of overindulgence and taking steps away from our health goals – an easy choice to make when the New Year (and new resolutions) are around the corner! Here are our absolute favourite gifts to give (and receive) that help our health, happiness and growth – we hope you love them just as much!
Self-help and motivation books everywhere are talking about the key component to a happier and more fulfilling life, and this is the concept of gratitude. Reflecting on the good, rather than the bad. Choosing to focus on the glass half full, rather than empty. The concept of a gratitude practice is simple, but somehow we find it to be difficult to implement. Enter the Five Minute Journal. Its elegant and simple design along with the notion that this should take no more than five minutes a day make this is a no-brainer. Each journal page prompts you to think and write down simple things you’re grateful for, morning and night. Ever heard of the saying, “the grass is greener where you water it”? Translating this to the practice of gratitude, your world is brighter and more fulfilled based on what you choose to shine the light on, good or bad. With the Five Minute Journal, you’ll be gifting someone that choice – one that can change the direction of their day, and hopefully their life, in a positive and more meaningful way.
This gadget has taken the meditation and mindfulness world by storm recently! For those looking to build a meditation practice or to simply achieve a calmer mind with increased focus, this is the gift for you. Studies on the benefits of mindfulness practice are staggering – we see impact to depression and anxiety, chronic pain, stress, emotional regulation, physical and mental performance, and other health benefits. It can also be used in children and adolescents, as a safe and interesting way to teach kids how to connect to their minds and begin the practice of mindfulness early in their lives. If you would like to try the headband, stop by the clinic and speak to our team – we offer guided meditation visits using the Muse headband. You can also purchase the Muse directly at our clinic!
If you’ve been to the clinic and mentioned the words planner, organizer, or agenda, you have likely quickly become aware that it is THE go-to for several of our practitioners. I was introduced to the Passion Planner last year by Sim Gill, one of our lovely psychotherapists at CCH, and it was love at first sight. I have used it more diligently than any other planner, both because of its ease of use and because of its goal-oriented structure. The planner starts off with a mind-map, where you set goals and intentions for the upcoming year, broken down into 3 month, 1 year, 3 year and lifetime wishes and goals. Each day is an opportunity to prioritize intentions and tasks that lead to achieving all of your goals – it’s the perfect gift for planner lovers!
Essential Oils & Diffuser Set
Essential oils are definitely the newest health trend, and while I am not a proponent of liberally using these potent oils, especially internally, I can certainly get behind some of their benefits. If you haven’t yet, do try essential oils and play around with the scents you enjoy in a diffuser. Make sure not to overdo it with using the oils internally or topically without consulting a naturopathic doctor – these oils are very potent and highly antimicrobial, which means that they have the potential to disrupt your naturally occurring microbial environment. I personally use essential oils for relaxation, meditation, and sleep purposes. My favourite essential oil for sleep is lavender – I will sometimes draw a bath with epsom salts and a few drops of lavender for a truly rejuvenating nighttime routine that primes my nervous system for a restful night’s sleep. I use a diffuser at my bedside with an essential oil sleep blend for high-stress or busy days that I fear may impact my ability to sleep. I also love using the diffuser during a morning meditation – I’ll gravitate to oils like orange, cedarwood, peppermint, or frankincense to help with mental clarity and mindfulness.
Gift Certificate for the Centre for Collaborative Health
We always have gift certificates available at the clinic for services you’d like to share with your loved ones. These services include Massage Therapy, Nutrition & Dietary Counselling, Naturopathic Medicine, Chiropractic Medicine, Psychotherapy, Acupuncture, Mindfulness Meditation and Relaxation Acupuncture, and Functional Medicine. This time of year, everyone could use some self-care in the form of our services. Stop by anytime or call the clinic to purchase a gift certificate!
We hope this has taken some of the stress away from shopping this year, and that you have some new ideas for your friends and family. On behalf of our whole team, I wish you and your loved ones a happy and healthy holiday season!
