A Chiropractic adjustment is the use of a directed force in a specific direction on a joint to help normalize spinal function. Through injuries or overuse, the joints of the spine can become fixated, seized, or locked, which impairs movement and causes pain. Adjustments loosen the joint to restore proper movement and optimize function. Some adjustments can cause an audible pop, which is heard when a gas bubble escapes the joint.
Our Chiropractor at CCH may include an adjustment as part of your treatment plan after a thorough history and physical examination. There are times when adjustments are not warranted and these will be explained to you.
The benefits to a Chiropractic adjustment include:
1. The release of endorphins, which are our body’s natural painkillers and “feel good” chemicals. These endorphins cause a near instant and temporary relief similar to pain medication, making you less aware of the problem.
2. Improved nutrient supply to the cartilage, ligaments and tendons that have limited blood supply. These structures require movement in order to get their nutrients. Joints will feel stiff when they have been in a contracted position for a long time and this can occur during a muscle spasm, scar tissue formation or sedentary behaviour. Think of this as being similar to the need to stretch after sitting in a car for a very long drive.
3. Reduced pressure on the nerves if there is inflammation, a bulging disc, or fragment surrounding the nerve. The adjustment can cause a relief of this pressure through movement of the joint.
4. Proprioceptive retraining, which allows for improved function as the brain will record the feedback from the joint’s motion. This is very important in chronic pain because the brain requires this training to normalize the movement of a joint. Especially for chronic conditions, the brain is in need of retraining the motion of that joint.
