Fascial Movement Taping (FMT)
Fascial Movement Taping (FMT) / Performance Taping involves the application of specialized tape to the muscles to promote healing and optimize range of motion. The function of any muscle is influenced by the fasica (a band of connective tissue) surrounding the muscle, other muscles, ligaments, tendons and blood and nutrient supply. Performance taping techniques focus on the entire movement chain of muscles and their related tissues instead of a single muscle focus.
Injury to a muscle or joint causes blood and other fluids to collect in the area which results in bruising, inflammation and swelling. Inflammation can cause extra pressure and stress on pain receptors that transmit pain signals to the brain. The body will attempt to drain the extra fluid away, however, sometimes the inflammation can compress the drainage channels, resulting in very little swelling or inflammation to be flushed away. Due to the inflammation in the area, blood and nutrient supply is limited and healing is halted. FMT/Performance taping creates small wrinkles on the skin’s surface which creates different pressure points. In negative pressure areas, the drainage channels open allowing for excess fluid to be drained, reducing the pressure on the pain receptors and improving pain symptoms.
At CCH, the Chiropractic Doctor will perform a functional assessment, also known as a movement screen to identify and quantify dysfunctional movement patterns that may contribute to your injury. A treatment plan including Performance Taping is created to help correct these dysfunctional patterns.
FMT/Performance Taping can benefit patients with:
- Lower and upper extremity injuries such as shin splints, Achilles tendinitis, tennis elbow
- Back pain
- Postural correction
- Edema control
- Pregnancy related issues
- Sports injuries
