Compassion Focused Therapy
Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is a psychotherapeutic approach that utilizes various streams of psychology including cognitive behaviour, evolutionary, social and developmental. CFT integrates the neuroscience of positive emotions and mindfulness practices of Buddhist psychology. This approach highlights the relationship that exists between our thoughts (cognition) and three other primitive emotion regulation systems including our threat (protection), drive (resource-seeking) and soothing systems. With the help of our Psychotherapists, clients can begin to effectively manage each of these systems and respond more appropriately to situations in their lives.
Therapists use CFT to first help clients develop the skills and attributes of compassion towards themselves and others. Through acceptance and warmth, clients are invited to make meaningful changes in themselves as well as their relationships. Once an individual begins to develop more compassion for themselves and others, they can develop more kind words that can overcome the negative thought patterns that have been at the core of their challenges.
All individuals can benefit from introducing more compassion and kindness into their daily lifestyles. Through increased compassion, clients are encouraged to combat shame, self-doubt, depression, anxiety and self criticism. Furthermore, clients can work through difficult relationships, life transitions and barriers to success with more ease once they have adopted a more compassionate perspective in life.
