Trauma-informed approach is not a specific therapy, rather it is a philosophy used by therapists to help clients recognize the impact trauma has on their lives. Therapists create a safe and non-judgmental environment that invites clients to explore the signs and symptoms of trauma and how it has influenced social, psychological, emotional, behavioural, and physical aspects of their lives. Most importantly, throughout the process, therapists focus on minimizing re-traumatization while clients recall traumatic experiences. This is achieved through proper training in active listening, compassionate care and sensitive questioning.
Individuals who have experienced trauma or are currently in a traumatic situation often experience unhealthy behaviours such as negative self-talk, destructive behaviour, substance abuse, depression and anxiety. Trauma-informed care can help clients identify maladaptive behaviours and develop essential skills and coping mechanisms to build goal-driven and fruitful lives.
