We see patients struggling with pain quite a bit here at the Centre for Collaborative Health, and often a team approach produces the best results. As a naturopathic doctor, I am often involved in consulting with patients about specific natural anti-inflammatory and pain relieving supplements that patients can do alongside these treatments.
One of the most common pain conditions we see is Arthritis, specifically Osteoarthritis. This degenerative disease is characterized by joint pain and stiffness caused by local inflammation in certain areas of the body. A key component of our naturopathic treatment plan is providing anti-inflammatory support.
Here are my top two supplement options for patients who have Arthritis:
Curcumin: This compound has been well researched for its anti-inflammatory and pain reducing abilities. Curcumin is a specific extract that comes from turmeric. I use this supplement for all types of pain, but most commonly for joint pain (both osteoarthritis and autoimmune causes). Some curcumin products are better than others and have better absorption, so be sure to talk to a professional for recommendations.
NEM (natural eggshell membrane): This is fairly new supplement to come to the natural health world. NEM works by helping rebuild cartilage in joints, and therefore can work well to decrease pain associated with Osteoarthritis. It works similarly to glucosamine & chondroitin, which many people are familiar with for arthritis, but I’ve found it provides positive effects more often and quicker.
As always, make sure to consult with a health care provider to determine which supplements may be safe and indicated for you.
