Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves inserting tiny needles into strategic points on the skin to reduce pain, improve energy balance and treat various conditions. At CCH, our practitioners are trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Western/Medical, electro-, and cosmetic methods of acupuncture.

Traditional Chinese Medicine

The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) approach to acupuncture is rooted in centuries of Eastern medical practice and supported by emerging evidence. The philosophy behind this method of acupuncture involves the balancing of qi (pronounced “chi”), through activating various energetic meridians that span the full body. Each of the TCM meridians is comprised of several acupuncture point locations, each having a role in maintaining the balance of that meridian’s organ system. Our doctors have several years of training and practice in TCM acupuncture, allowing them to individualize your treatment protocol with a carefully chosen set of points to help restore energy balance and by doing so, improve your symptoms and overall health. This form of acupuncture is often used to support the following conditions:
  • Fertility, including pre- and post-IVF and IUI treatments
  • Menstrual irregularities, including PMS
  • Pregnancy support
  • Digestive complaints
  • Anxiety and stress
  • Cold and flu-like symptoms

Medical Acupuncture

The western approach to acupuncture, often termed “Medical Acupuncture”, is a method used to promote circulation, reduce pain, and enhance muscular relaxation. This method is typically used for musculoskeletal aches and pains and nerve-related conditions. The following symptoms and conditions are often supported by medical acupuncture techniques:

  • Sports injuries
  • Joint pain/arthritis
  • Back and neck pain
  • Muscle tightness and spasms
  • Numbness and tingling
  • Migraines and Tension headaches

Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture is the use of pulsating or vibrating stimulation to acupuncture needles in order to strengthen the impact and intensity of the treatment. This Traditional Chinese Medicine approach was based on manual stimulation of needles that is done by the practitioner’s hands.

The use of electroacupuncture can be incorporated with both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Medical approaches to acupuncture. As a substitute for manual stimulation, this approach allows for a controlled intensity, and can be adjusted to either a constant or intermittent frequency.

Electrodes are attached to the acupuncture needles after insertion and the practitioner chooses a desired frequency of stimulation based on the patient’s treatment protocol. Patients typically report a gentle vibrating sensation, which can be increased or decreased based on their tolerance.

Benefits of Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture is an innovative approach to traditional acupuncture includes electrical stimulation. Traditional acupuncture involves inserting needles into specific points along the body. With this new therapeutic technique, a device delivers a mild electric current between pairs of acupuncture needles. Here are some benefits of electroacupuncture:

Acupuncture For Pain Management:

In general, electroacupuncture is used for pain relief. The electrical stimulation enhances the effects of traditional acupuncture, by triggering the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving chemicals in the body. Conditions like arthritis migraines and back pain  are among those where electroacupuncture has been proven beneficial.

Muscle Relaxation with acupuncture techniques

The electrical stimulation delivered by the device through the needles can help relax muscles. This therapy is particularly efficient for people suffering from muscle tension, spasms, or stiffness due to injuries or chronic conditions.

Enhanced Healing:

By improving blood circulation and promoting tissue repair, electroacupuncture can hasten the healing process for injuries such as sprains strains, and fractures.

Reducing Inflammation with acupuncture techniques

According to some studies, electroacupuncture may have anti-inflammatory effects. It might help promote anti-inflammatory substances in the body. Individuals with conditions involving inflammation such as arthritis or autoimmune disorders can find this therapy relieving.

Improved Nerve Function:

Electroacupuncture can help balance the nervous system. It might assist in managing symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, improving nerve function, and reducing pain numbness, or tingling.

Stress and Anxiety Reduction:

Traditional acupuncture as well as electroacupuncture can help in managing stress. Both are thought to affect the nervous system, promoting relaxation and reducing stress. Electroacupuncture may even help balance the autonomic nervous system, aiding conditions like anxiety or stress-related disorders.

Enhanced Treatment for Certain Conditions:

There’s ongoing research into electroacupuncture’s potential role in complementing some conventional treatments for particular conditions like stroke recovery, fertility support, and substance abuse cessation. In these cases, electroacupuncture may be used as an adjunct therapy in collaboration with your family physician’s recommendations.

Discuss customizable treatment options:

During a therapeutic session of electroacupuncture, the frequency and intensity of the electrical stimulation can vary depending on the condition being treated, the individual needs, and the practitioner’s approach. So the therapy can be personalized and the treatment approached differently.

Fewer Side Effects:

Electroacupuncture is generally considered safe when performed by a trained and licensed practitioner who follows proper hygiene and safety protocols. It generally has lower risks of serious complications or infections and fewer systemic side effects compared to certain medications or procedures that often cause a range of side effects and complications.

Potential for Research and Development:

Research into electroacupuncture continues to expand. Researchers and practitioners aim to elucidate its mechanisms, refine treatment protocols, and establish its efficacy across various medical conditions.

When considering electroacupuncture therapy as treatment or any other alternative therapy, as with any other medical treatment, it’s very important to consult with a qualified healthcare professional who can provide guidance tailored to individual health needs

Cosmetic/Facial Rejuvenation Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as Facial Rejuvenation acupuncture, is a safe and painless method for revitalizing the skin and reducing the signs of aging. This relaxing therapy follows both traditional and western approaches, where tiny facial needles are inserted to support collagen production, circulation and the balancing of meridians that are involved in aging skin. This method can be used to improve the appearance of fine lines, deep wrinkles, sagging eyelids and jowls, puffiness around the eyes, and redness throughout the face, all aiding in maintaining a youthful and radiant appearance. Younger patients may also opt for this therapy to slow the onset of aging skin, or if they experience blemishes, acne, dark circles, spots and inconsistencies of the skin. After an initial intake with one of our Naturopathic Doctors, a facial acupuncture protocol will be created, which may include the use of body points on the hands, abdomen and/or legs to help support the body holistically through acupuncture. All subsequent treatments are 1 hour in length, which includes 30 minutes of acupuncture followed by a relaxing aromatherapy facial massage, which further promotes strengthening and rejuvenation of the skin. The typical protocol includes 10-12 weekly treatments, followed by a maintenance program as needed to uphold the integrity of the skin.
