Libido not where you’d like it to be? You aren’t alone – 1 in 5 males have issues with “hypoactive sexual desire disorder” aka low libido, and there are a number of potential causes that should be explored. As a naturopath, I often investigate for hormonal imbalances that can be the cause of low libido, including the following:
Low testosterone – one of the main hormones to regulate libido. Levels tend to decline with age, but can also be affected by certain illnesses and medications. If testosterone levels are low, certain lifestyle changes like losing weight and exercise help, as do herbs and in some cases testosterone replacement therapy. Hypothyroidism (a sluggish thyroid) symptoms also mirror those of low testosterone, so testing for both these hormones is recommended.
High cortisol – our main stress hormone, cortisol, inhibits proper testosterone production, which is one reason why stress can cause sexual issues. This can also be tested, and treatments can range from stress management techniques (mindfulness, meditation) to herbs and supplements like zinc, vitamin D and ashwagandha.
Comprehensive testing can ensure that treatment is targeted towards any identified imbalances, ultimately resulting in more effective outcomes!
