Diabetes is a very common condition and a growing concern in our modern world, so we tend to help a lot of patients with concerns about their blood sugar, whether diagnosed with diabetes or not. As is well known, eating healthy, exercising and maintaining a healthy body weight of course help – these factors alone can resolve the condition. That being said, eating healthy, exercising and losing weight TAKE TIME and, lets face it, isn’t always easy. So while a patient is working on diet and exercise changes, our naturopaths also suggest natural products that can help regulate blood sugars to improve your health in a shorter time frame and reduce or eliminate the need for medications. Here are some of our go-to’s:
Reversing Diabetes with Supplements
1) Chromium
Chromium supplementation is well researched for regulating blood sugars and improving insulin sensitivity, helping insulin transport glucose out of the bloodstream and into cells to use for energy. Dosing varies slightly depending on the individual, but a common recommendation is 200mcg three times a day.
2) Cinnamon
Cinnamon, like chromium, is a natural strategy to lower blood sugars. In a study published by the journal Diabetes Care, cinnamon was shown to decrease blood sugar levels from 18-29%, and had a side benefit of lowering triglycerides and LDL (aka “bad”) cholesterol. It’s great for much more than apple pie, it turns out! To take advantage of this superpower herb (actually the inner bark of a tree!), sprinkle 1/2 a teaspoon on your favourite food or pumpkin-spiced latte.
3) Gymnema
Another herb with research for lowering blood glucose is gymnema, a shrub that grows in the forests of Africa and India. It is helpful for diabetes for this reason alone, but it has an even more exciting effect – it can LOWER SUGAR CRAVINGS (*disclaimer: this doesn’t work for everyone, but I’ve seen it work quite well for some)! Dosing of this (and all herbs) varies depending on the way the herb is prepared and concentrated, so seek advice from a natural practitioner for dosing.
